Welcome to St. Michael Catholic Church in Garden City, South Carolina

Over 30 years ago, the parish of St. Michael began as a mission of Saint Andrew’s in Myrtle Beach with Rev. J. Fleming McManus acting as Administrator. A simple church was built and dedicated on July 18, 1976. The Rt. Rev. Edmund F. McCaffrey, former Abbot of Belmont Abbey in North Carolina and first pastor of St. Michael’s Parish, celebrated the first Mass. Today, our pastor Rev. Raymond J. Carlo, serves the St. Michael Catholic community in the same welcoming spirit as our originators.

St. Michael parish — part of the Diocese of Charleston — has grown tremendously in a short period of time thanks to the support of our members.

We currently have approximately 2,500 registered families comprising of over 5,000 people. Each winter, we increase our parishioners and visitors by 30%. We have forty parish ministries, a good-size CCD program and active youth groups along with a wonderful school that includes a large gym and parish hall area. Due to an increase in parishioners, the mission church was raised to the status of a parish on May 21, 1979 and officially dedicated as St. Michael the Archangel Parish by Bishop Ernest L. Unterkoefler of the Diocese of Charleston. The development of this parish continued during the services of Father Joseph Hanley with the addition of the new administration offices and our school.

St. Michael Catholic School is growing rapidly and is noted for being one of this areas top schools. This year, we have added an after-school Enrichment Program that is unlike anything offered in the area. It is not babysitting, it is not daycare. It is an extension of a student’s day and combines academics, music, art, sports and more. It is open to all area elementary students, not just students attending St. Michaels. You are welcome to participate in the many activities we offer whether you are a regular parishioner, a seasonal resident or just visiting. If you are interested in becoming a member, registration forms are available throughout the church and in our church office. You may submit registration forms by placing them in the collection basket or by taking them to the church office.

We welcome you to St. Michael Catholic Church and thank our parishioners for making this parish what it is today. We would not have come this far without your assistance. Thank you for your continued support and a strong future in the Catholic tradition.
