LOST AND FOUND

Are you missing a pair of glasses, a piece of jewelry, or even a baby doll? Have you checked with the parish office? We have lost and found items that have been brought to the office. If you are looking for something lost, perhaps it was found and brought here! Please check with the office front desk.

FOUND – Two folding lawn chairs. These were left out in front of the offices on July 1st. Apparently, they were used by someone waiting in the line for Mass intentions that day and they have been there ever since. If you are missing your turquoise and white slatted folding chairs, they are here! Please come by the office and pick them up. They are outside on the sidewalk so they are accessible at any time. Thank you!

CATHOLIC CHURCH GUIDELINES FOR CREMATION

Now that cremation is permitted, we urge all Catholics to follow the guidelines of the Church.

The Church requires that All cremated remains be buried. The urn is to be interred in a cemetery, in the ground or in a niche in a columbarium. Anything else is disrespecting the body that God gave us. Scattering the ashes anywhere, separating the ashes into groups for distribution, or keeping the urn with the ashes in the house for years is absolutely wrong in all cases.
Please remember that life is a gift from God and we are given human life with our bodies and souls together. We are made in the image and likeness of God! The idea that our souls are good and sacred and
should be respected but our bodies are not is not and has never been a Christian doctrine. I hope this clarification is clear and understandable. If not, please call the church office for further information.
We recently added 2 new units to our columbarium site and niches are available for purchase for $2,200. Each niche holds 2 standard urns and this is the total cost, including engraving. Urns must be purchased separately from the funeral director of your choice. The current columbarium site is temporary, as we will develop a new site next to the new church. That setting will be permanent and will include plantings, walkways and trees for a tranquil prayer garden atmosphere.
If you are interested in purchasing a niche, please complete a Columbarium Reservation Form found in the back of the church or in the parish office. You can place completed forms in the collection basket or drop them at the office. You will be called to make an appointment to come in and complete the necessary paperwork, choose your niche and make payment at that time. Please call Virginia at in the office at ext. 26 with any additional questions.

WELCOME !

Welcome new members and visitors.  Registration forms are around the church for those who would like to become registered members of St. Michael Church.  Please fill the green form out and place it in the collection or take it to the office.

PRAYER BEFORE TRAVELING
All powerful and ever-living God,
Protect us, who are your servants: Walk by our side to help us;
Be our companion and strength on the road and our refuge in every diversity.
Lead us, O Lord, so that we will reach our destination in safety
and happily return to our home. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

 BACK TO BASICS

LAST SESSION—WEDNESDAY, JULY 28—7 PM IN THE CHURCH

Come for the final Wednesday evening as Fr. Andrew and seminarian Roger Morgan close our special summer mission, “Back to Basics!”

This one-hour presentations will be lively, imaginative, and packed with information on the biblical and historical reasons for our Catholic faith!

VOCATION CHALICE PROGRAM

The Vocation Chalice is a special chalice that was given to Father Ray and is visiting households throughout the parish to pray for vocations. Each month the chalice will be picked up and then passed to the next family at the end of Mass. The 6:00 pm Saturday Mass will have it for July (PLEASE NOTE THE MASS CHANGE FOR JULY), and so on. If you have any questions or would like to sign up for a particular week, please call Lois at 215-5666 or e-mail Ted & Mary Ann at Maryanngent@aol.com. God’s blessing will be upon you! There are “prayer card stickers” on the tables around the church with the Prayer for Vocations from our diocese. Please take one (or a couple) and pray for vocations all year. Thank you!

HOLYLAND OLIVEWOOD CRAFTS

On the weekend of July 24th and 25th there will be a display of beautiful Olivewood Hand carvings from the town of Bethlehem at the church. There will be a small display in the back of the church and a full display and sales will be in PAC Hall before and after all Masses. These carving are made by the Christians of Bethlehem who use them as their source of income. These brothers and sisters of ours are enduring hardships at this moment because of the volatile situation in their home country. Christians in the holy land used to be more than 30% of the population, now they are less than 2% because of the situation. You can support them by purchasing these carvings. By sending the proceeds back to the craftsmen’s families, this solution has allowed Christian families to remain in their homeland and work at their traditional crafts. The money flowing back to the families has allowed them to maintain a stable way of life and allowed them to work at what they know best.

AND A SPECIAL THANK YOU

Paule Barbeau, our Vacation Bible School Coordinator, has thanked all those who helped with our week of activities for the children of Saint Michael. Now we must extend a very special thank you to Paule for her long hours and tireless efforts to make our Vacation Bible School a big success. Paule is new to our parish and has jumped into volunteering with both feet! She has proven herself to be a valuable asset to the Religious Ed program and we are most appreciative.

CHURCH LITERATURE

Please do not place any literature in the church without having it approved by the office. We have someone in charge of placing and keeping up the items in the church, so please do not move things or replace anything—we appreciate your cooperation in this matter

TALENT SHOW REPLACES PICNIC FOR 2010

Since we are anticipating construction to be going on this fall, we will not have our annual parish picnic this September. In its place, we are planning a “St. Michael’s Got Talent” show for all parishioners to enjoy. Auditions were held last week, and there are certainly some very talented people in our parish! We hope this event will bring all of us together for fun and fellowship as the picnic does. It is also a way for us to thank all of you for your hard work throughout the year. There will be no tickets to buy for the show. This event is all about you—our parishioners!

WAS IT SOMETHING I SAID?

One of the unintended consequences of sending a parent to prison is the damage and injustice done to their children. These children are often confused and isolated. They experience social stigma, economic deprivation, low self-esteem, and feelings of hopelessness. Yet, these children have done nothing wrong – they have committed no crime!

Guiding Children of Promise is a new program at St. Michael’s that ministers to children who have an incarcerated parent(s) through group activities, spiritual formation, mentoring, scouting/ camping, and special activities. Contact Lauren or Patty for more information or to sign up to be a mentor or help with this program. There are many opportunities to share your time & talents with these children. If you are interested in being contacted, please complete the form below and place it in the collection basket or bring it to the parish office.

Yes, I am interested in the Guiding Children of Promise Program. Please contact me:

PASTORAL COUNCIL MEMBERS

Recently, we began publishing information on our pastoral council—its purpose, guidelines, and vision criteria.  For the next few weeks, we will focus on the members, their terms, their area of coverage on the council and personal background information.  We hope you find this helpful and that you will feel free to contact any of the members regarding any information to bring to the pastoral council.

CAROL LOSKILL

Twenty-Five years ago, Carol and her family moved here from the Philadelphia area. She was raised Lutheran but had a grandmother, aunts and cousins who were Catholic. She was married in the Catholic Church to Richard and their children were baptized Catholic. When their oldest child started parochial school, the Holy Spirit said “it’s time” and Carol became Catholic in 1977. She was an active participant in the church committees and school organizations. After moving down to Surfside, she continued to help with CCD and Parish Council with Father Hanley and also became a Charter member of the CDA Court St. Michael.

Carol retired from Georgetown Hospital three years ago and presently president of the St. Michael’s Women’s Guild and vice president of the South Carolina Council of Catholic Women-Pee Dee Deanery. She loves working for her church and parish and is looking forward to serving on the Pastoral Council. She is extremely proud of her three family members who were welcomed to the Catholic faith this past Easter Vigil at St Michael’s.

CAMPAIGN CORNER

Phase II of our capital campaign – BUILD GOD’S CHURCH; LEAVE A LEGACY is the next part of our capital campaign to raise funds for our New Church.

This week we are featuring another Memorial item. This week’s items have been on the list since the beginning and are greatly needed for our new church:

The piano and organ are being memorialized for $10,000 each. These items are a very important part of any celebration we have at St. Michael’s. The Mass, funerals, weddings, and all other celebrations would not be as beautiful without music. Remember, a 10% share can be purchased for each memorial, payable over 3 years, thereby making it possible for many to be involved in the purchase of an item. It would be a great honor if parishioners involved in any of our music ministries would contribute to make the memorializing of these items extra special!

We would like to introduce Peter Reibold as the Project Manager for our New Church Building Project. He will be working out of the former Campaign Office and can be reached at extension 24. Pete has worked on several church building projects in our area and was a member of the Diocesan Buildings & Renovation Commission for 3 years. His experience and expertise are invaluable and we are blessed to have the opportunity to work with him!

Mass requests will not be taken over the phone.  If you cannot come to the office, you may mail in your request along with the stipend (Masses are $10.00 each, main altar flowers are $40.00 and side altar flowers are $30.00).  Please be sure to include a second choice of dates and times if your first choice is not available when your request is recieved.  Requests that are mailed in will be posted in the Mass Book after everyone in the office has been helped.  If you mail in your request, send it to:  Attn: Kay Hill, St. Michael Church, 542 Cypress Ave., Garden City, SC 29576.

NEEDED: COURAGEOUS MEN AND WOMEN

Family Honor needs individuals who are willing to consider joining one of our teams of chastity presenters in South Carolina. If you are a man or woman who wants to do something with your life that will make a significant difference in our culture and in your local community, please consider registering for the fall, 2010 semester of our online course, The Truth and Meaning of Sexuality, Love and Family: Cultural Implications. This is the first step in our process of preparing chastity presenters. The online format of the course provides the flexibility you need and the course content will enrich your knowledge on a wide range of subjects that include: the history of sexual thought and expression; the consequences of the sexual revolution; and the contribution of the modern sex education movement to the breakdown of sexual morality. In addition, long-standing theories of psychosexual development will be presented and further supported by current brain studies and the psycho-social research on the need for human ‘connectedness’. The faith response to the cultural upheaval will be framed with the language of John Paul II’s theology of the body as well as Benedict XVI’s explanation of human sexual love in Deus Caritas Est. Numerous other topics relating to sexuality, love and family will also be covered. Visit Family Honor’s website: www.familyhonor.org  for an application and more info or call our office in Columbia, SC: 803-929- 0858. Deadline for registrations is August 9.
