Flashcard games

Here are some flashcard games you can play with your child to reinforce reading.

GO FISH

Pass out x number of cards to each player. Instead of a pair being matching words, they just must have something in common. For instance, your child could ask, “Do you have any words that begin with “d”. If you do, you would give the card to the child.BUT, for it to count as a pair the child must be able to read both words. Then it would be your turn and you would ask them something. Every once in a while read a word incorrectly and see if your child can correct you.

TREASURE HUNT

Make a trail of flashcards leading to- the TV, or the refridgerator, or the door to go out, somewhere where they would get a small reward. Have the cards facing down. Have the child roll a dice, (or tie in math and do a math problem: What is 4-2?) Have child move that many flashcards. BUT, they have to be able to read all the cards they are passing. If they cannot read all of them they stay where they are until it is their turn again. You can play this with siblings and they might have vocabulary words, or have to spell their spelling words, etc. When your child reaches the end they get a small reward- a popsicle out of the freezer, or they get to watch a show or they get to play outside. Make it something small but tangible.

ALPHABETICAL ORDER

Give your child a few (start small, we can always work up) index cards and have them put them in alphabetical order. Then have the child give you some and you put them in alphabetical order. Again, give them the oppurtunity to feel smart and superior- make a couple of mistakes now and then. Or ask “Wow, which comes first “d” or “t”? Can you help me figure it out?” Kids LOVE to think they are smarter than we are.
