We are very excited to announce the addition of Latin to this years curriculum for grades 4 & 5. Mrs. Sarah Kelly will be teaching this course, which will consist of a comprehensive introduction to the Latin language as well as an exploration of the ancient Roman and early Christian cultures from which it emerged.
Latin students will learn:
Vocabulary
Grammar and derivatives
Latin sayings, prayers, and songs
Latin stories, history, geography, and culture
How will students benefit from the study of Latin?
Latin develops the powers of logic, observation, comparison, attention to detail, and concentration. These skills will be carried over into other areas of academic study and are one of the greatest benefits of Latin study.
Studying Latin helps develop an interest in English words and makes the English language come alive. More than half of all English words come from Latin, and students will start to see Latin roots in many new words they encounter.
The study of Latin will also facilitate the learning of languages that derive from it directly, such as Spanish, Italian, and French.
Each student will receive the text
Latina Christiana: Introduction to Christian Latin
In addition, Latin students will need to bring the following supplies to class:
1-inch loose-leaf binder
loose-leaf paper
5 dividers
