S.E.E.D.S. Program
SEEDS is an acronym for “SUPPORTING EARLY ELEMENTARY DEVELOPMENTAL SKILLS”. It’s a
program that supports the language arts curriculum in grades K through 5. This program utilizes elementary level children’s literature to develop critical thinking skills and cognitive development through various methods of creative learning. This innovative program, piloted in the Greenville County Elementary School System, has been enthusiastically received by the students and teachers of St. Michael Catholic School. S.E.E.D.s is not currently being offered. We are looking for volunteers who want to bring S.E.E.D.S. back. If you are interested, please contact your child’s teacher.
Dr. Mildred C. Young, program founder, generously donated this innovative program to St. Michael Catholic School. To date, we are the only school in Horry and Georgetown counties to utilize this unique enrichment program.
Teachers and volunteers have been using the SEEDS format with great success.
After reading a selected story, the SEEDS format is applied through various projects including, creative writing, art and brainstorming techniques to expand their literary experience. By doing so, the children hone many skills — like organization and problem solving — while being creative.
Here’s an outline of a typical SEEDS Format:
Part I. BEGINNING (questions about the story)
• Getting the facts – comprehension
• Beyond the facts – encourage unique responses to begin creative process
Part II. INVESTIGATING
• Thinking creatively
• Organizing the details – using planning process
• Predicting Outcomes
• Making Choices – evaluating problems
• Finding Solutions – problem solving
• Expressing Yourself – explore feelings
• Gathering Evidence – research to support data
• Judging Ideas – sharing opinions after analysis
Part III. STRETCHING
• All about the author
• Finding out more
